Torah · Halacha YomitThe Conditions to Allow Borer - Part 1Rabbi Uri Nahum · November 6, 2026 · 39 Melachot-15Play+30Position0:00—Save⌄ShareTranscript0:01So we spoke yesterday about using a special tool to separate,0:06and the tool has to be something that's made to separate. You cannot use it on Shabbat0:10because that will be, although under melachet, but like we said in the halachot of borer, to put together.0:16So an example of this would be, they have these spoons with holes in it, called a perforated spoon.0:21And you have a, let's say, you have meatballs, what we call kibbeh balls, in juice, a lot of juice,0:30and you're taking that spoon specifically so you can take what you want.0:33You want the meat, you're taking out the meat, but you take out the meat,0:37but that spoon, a special spoon to filter out the liquid, and that's why you're using it.0:42That would be a problem. You cannot use that tool.0:45Even though you're taking what you want, you're taking the wanted part from the mixture,0:48you're taking the ochel, but it doesn't make a difference because you're using a special tool to separate.0:54Now, but to use that special tool when it's not separating, for example, to use that same spoon that has holes in it to take out rice.1:02What are you separating rice from? From the air, right? There's no mixture of rice and air.1:06So in that case, there's no problem to use that spoon for rice because it's not separating.1:11So the tool is not asur to use. This tool is asur to use for separating,1:16even though you're using it to separate the ochel, the food, what you want from the mixture.1:23Another example that—not a question now—what about using a fork?1:29So I have, again, the same meatballs, the kibbeh balls, kibbeh basha, and there's a lot of liquid inside.1:35I just want the meatballs; I don't want the1:36juice. So I could—you said I can't use a tool—I could stick my hands, but I think other people might just, you know,1:44kick me off the table or just, you know, whatever.1:47You know, I don't think it's a possibility. Don't do it. Please don't do it. Don't use your hands.1:51Can I use a fork? Can I stick a fork inside and pull out the meatball,1:56or is that called using a special tool?1:58So in this case, the answer is you could use a fork.2:01Why? You just told me before you're not allowed to use a2:03tool, and the answer is it's not a special tool that's made for separating.2:07The fork is an extension of your hand.2:09Like we said, you don't live in tents and like the Bedouins;2:13you're not sticking your hand in the food.2:15So therefore, you're using the fork;2:17it's an extension of your hand.2:19So if you're using anything that would be considered like an extension of your hand,2:24even though you're technically separating, but that's like separating with your hand.2:27Like we said, you're allowed to separate with your2:29hand. What you're not allowed to do is to use a special tool2:34to separate. Okay, the next halacha. Again, we could go on and on.2:38There's a lot of different examples, but I think the2:40purpose—we're trying to cover the2:4239 melachot, especially now, Rosh Chodesh Kislev is coming up.2:44We have to go to halachot of Hanukkah,2:46so we're trying to squeeze in whatever we can by2:49Boreir. Let's go to the next halacha by2:51Boreir, and that is the timing.2:54Even if you separate from a mixture what you want,2:57even if you're not using a special tool,3:00you still need one more condition to allow it to separate,3:03and that is that you have to have intention to use it3:08for—let's call it for immediate use.3:10We'll see what immediate means.3:11We'll give you a time frame for that.3:13But the condition is that you have to use it for immediate use.3:15Otherwise, you're separating3:17something—if you think about it, it's technically not wanted.3:20If you're separating something not for immediate use, for a later time,3:24let's say for the3:25next—besides that you're preparing from Shabbat for another day,3:27but even for Shabbat for many hours later,3:31so it's not needed right now.3:32You're taking what's not needed.3:34So separating for a later time will also be3:38assur, even though you're taking what you want from the mixture.3:41So an example of this is that let's say3:45you have guests that came over,3:47and you put for them, you know, that... Different parts of the plate,3:52what do you call it?3:53Like a platter that has different things for nuts.3:57Forgot what it's called.4:00Whatever, everybody knows what I'm talking about.4:01Okay, so if you're watching the video, it's like this.4:03Okay, anyway,4:05so if you're using that plate and then, you4:08know, nuts get mixed with each other.4:10The peanuts jump to the almonds,4:12the almonds jump to the cashews, right?4:13So now the guest left, and now you want to clean it up.4:17You want to put the almonds back to the almonds.4:19You want the almonds now,4:20you take it, put it back,4:21okay?4:22So now what do you do?4:23But you're not using it for now.4:24You're doing it for a later time.4:26Later, three hours later, friends are going to come over.4:29That would be asur also, because it's not for immediate use.4:33Again, how much time,4:34be'ezrat Hashem, we'll talk about it next halacha.
