Torah · Halacha YomitFood vs WasteRabbi Uri Nahum · November 4, 2026 · 39 Melachot-15Play+30Position0:00—Save⌄ShareTranscript0:01Okay, so we started talking about the halachot, and he gave a very, very important0:10definition, which is the defining—not what it means separating, taking out what you want from the mixture.0:16So you have to know whatever this mixture means, that it has to be at least two ingredients.0:20We spoke about that two days ago, and yesterday we spoke about what does it mean it has to be actually mixed together.0:25So the melachah is when you remove what you don't want from the mixture.0:32That's what borer is. Borer is just using a wind, and borer, you're using your hand, and meraked, using a special tool.0:41But if you take what you do want from the mixture, that will not be a problem.0:45So to separate something that you do want from the mixture, it's not a0:49problem. So let's take an example. A person has a bowl of different types of nuts, in other words, that they sell, mixed nuts,0:55okay? So now the guy is looking at the thing and he wants, let's say for example, he wants to eat the1:01almonds—no, actually the cashews, because they only give you four cashews in the whole big jar,1:05okay? So he wants the cashews. You look at the cashews, you take out what you want, the cashews.1:11That's what you want to eat. It's not a problem to separate. Are you separating?1:15That's not—separation is not a problem. Separating what you don't want is the problem.1:22In halachah, this is called as solid. When you read halachah, it can sometimes be misleading.1:27Some people say, Well, solid, it says ochel versus psolet. Ochel means food. Psolet sounds like waste, garbage.1:36So a guy may say, Okay, look, I see—let's say I don't like cashews.1:41There's four cashews in the big jar, and I want to take out the cashew. I don't want them, right?1:46A person might argue and say, That's not psolet, it's not garbage.1:52Good. Kashrus, our ochel, just, I don't want it. So ochel is solded, as far as the definition, when you read1:59the halacha, it doesn't mean only literally food versus non-food. What it means: what you want versus what you don't want.2:08So if at that time you don't want kashrus, even though it's delicious, it's expensive, it doesn't make any— you know, some people say,2:16but somebody else might like it. It doesn't make a difference. That would be a problem.2:19A common example, usually a couple of people tell me, is in the two types of people who eat2:24salad. So one people that like tomatoes, and people that don't like tomatoes, okay?2:29So it's interesting, every time I speak about this in salads, I hate tomatoes,2:33I like tomatoes. Let's say they put you in your bowl, in your plate on Shabbat, they put you salad,2:40and there's tomatoes in it. You're the type that doesn't like tomatoes.2:43To separate tomatoes would be an issur d'oraita of2:47borer, to remove the tomatoes out of the salad, that would be an issur d'oraita of2:52borer. What's something that we learned yesterday? Removing it from the plate.2:55Now somebody might argue and say, Well, I don't like it, but somebody else might like it.3:00But you're not doing it for them.3:02If, however, you're doing it for somebody else, what does that mean?3:05That means somebody, you go on the table, Anyone want tomatoes?3:09Doing one slice, and all of a sudden someone says, Yeah, yeah, I'll take the tomatoes, okay.3:12So now you take the tomatoes that you don't like, and you want to give it to him.3:16So in that case, since you're giving the tomatoes directly to the other person who likes it,3:20it's not called pesoles anymore. It's not called,3:23I don't want it; now he wants it, so he's allowed to take it.3:25Even though to you it's not wanted, but at that moment that you're separating, what's going on through your head?3:30You're taking the wanted product, the wanted ingredient, to give to somebody else that wants it.3:37That would be3:39ochel. So like we said,3:41ochel as3:41you direct. Well, it doesn't have to be, as long as you're giving it to him.3:45So you get plate from that3:47plate. Yeah, that's fine, because it's going on the way there.3:49You just have to travel eight guys' plates for some reason, but that's fine.3:51You can separate it, but that's again because the act of separation is what we look at.3:55At that moment of separation, is it an ochel or is it3:59pesoles? So that's a very important rule.4:01To separate what's wanted is mutar.4:04To separate what's not wanted is asur.4:07Now this today is halacha, but there's more to come.4:10All this halacha, there's still more conditions, so please make sure you listen to the next one. Thank you.
